DJ Puff's Volcanic Caper/Codemasters (YS88, 40)
See DJ Puff? See the word 'crap'? They go well together, don't they?
DNA Warrior/Aartronic (YS41, 41)
Shoot 'em up with neat storyline sabotaged by relentlessly dreary and unoriginal gameplay. Simply not a full-price product.
Daley Thompson's Olympic Challenge/Ocean (YS35, 7)
A challenging, difficult sports sim with outstanding graphics but one track waggling game-play.
Daley Thompson's Olympic Challenge C (YS45, 75)
As part of the Special Action compilation.
Dan Dare/Virgin (YS11, 9)
Dan Dare II/Virgin (YS27, 9)
Skillo follow up to the original classic. Flip screen arcade adventure at its very, very best. Destined to become a major hit.
Dan Dare III/Virgin (YS50, 89)
So close to a Megagame, but not quite close enough, Dan Dare III has gorgeous graphics and great gameplay but there's not all that much there. Shame.
Dandy/Electric Dreams (YS13, 9)
Danger Mouse In Making Whoopee/Sparklers (YS10, 8)
Darius +/The Edge (YS53, 75)
A sideways-scrolling shoot-'em-up with all the usual stuff. A bit like R-Type really, but not half as good.
Darius arcade screenshots A
Dark Fusion/Gremlin (YS36, 7)
Good looking, and a good sounding game, fast and hard, but oddly unsatisfying to play. File under 'Good' but not 'Great'.
Dark Fusion/Gremlin (YS41, 81)
A superior shoot 'em up in the traditional mould. If you reckon you can handle yet another one, go for it.
Dark Sceptre/Firebird (YS25, 9)
Excellent graphic detail in a complex and thoughtful game that'll test both new and old hands at adventuring.
Dark Side, The/Incentive (YS32, 9)
Dark Tower, The/River (YS79, 99)
Darkest Road, The/Zenobi (YS73, 80)
Darkman/Ocean (YS70, 85)
Damn good beat-'em-up - but it's very tough and you only get one life, so you might not get too far.
Dawnssley/Top Ten (YS23, 3)
Cheap Gauntlet clone that lacks quality and gameplay. Very poor value.
Daylight Robbery (SAM)/Supplement Software (YS80, 65)
Days Of Thunder/Mindscape (YS61, 70)
Averageish driving game about a fairly boring sort of racing. Not massively thrill-packed, it has to be said.
Deactivators/Reaktor (YS11, 9)
Dead End/Interactive (YS53, 40)
Dead Or Alive C (YS63, UNR)
As part of the 4-Most Action compilation.
Dead Ringer/Reaktor (YS21, 6)
Unusual shoot'n'dodge game which is more addictive than you'd imagine on first sight. Let down by poor graphics.
Deadly Mission/John Henry Enterprises (YS23, 7)
Death Or Glory/CRL (YS25, 4)
A mega-flop if ever there were one. Leave well alone, and ignore this warning at your peril!
Death Or Glory/Dream World Adventures (YS90, 99)
Death Wake/Quicksilva (YS3, 8)
Deathchase/2.99 Classics (YS9, 6)
Deathscape/Starlight (YS20, 9)
Ultra-fast, multi-level shoot 'em up which will have you begging for more. Should come with additional adrenaline for addicts.
Deathwish III/Gremlin (YS22, 9)
Deathwish III C (YS30, 6)
As part of the 10 Great Games II compilation.
Deep Probe/Compass (YS87, 60)
Deep Strike/Durell (YS14, 4)
Deep, The/US Gold (YS39, 3)
A dull, tedious game from US Gold, which deserves to sink without trace.
Defenders Of The Earth (SAM)/Enigma Variations (YS58, 84)
The first 'proper' SAM game and it's stunning. Perhaps lacking in long-term appeal though.
Defenders Of The Earth/Hi-Tec r (YS65, 64)
Deflektor/Gremlin (YS25, 9)
That rarest of specimens - an original game that's also chronically addictive. An instant classic, methinks.
Deliverance - Stormlord II/Hewson (YS56, 91)
An excellent arcade adventure, packed with variety and even harder than it's predecessor.
Demon From The Dark Side/Compass (YS13, 7)
Denizen/Players (YS31, 5)
Dervish/Power House (YS30, 3)
Desert Hawk/Players (YS11, 2)
Desolator/US Gold (YS32, 7)
Birrova hybrid of Ikari Warriors and Gauntlet, quite good fun, but not as good as either of the above.
Devastating Blow/Beyond Belief (YS70, 70)
An ordinary but slick boxing game that's surprisingly good fun to play.
Deviants/Players (YS28, 8)
Top-notch cheapie platformer from the author ofJoe Blade. It's positively deviant (f'nar)!
Devil's Crown, The/Mastertronic (YS5, 8)
Devil's Hand, The/Compass (YS37, 7)
Diablo/Mark Cantrell (YS43, 80)
Diamond/Destiny (YS33, 5)
   A non-violent shoot 'em up - what's the point?
Dick Tracy/Titus (YS64, 53)
Very bad punch-'n'-shoot-'em-up - dreadful waste of a good licence. (Sob!)
Dirt Track Racer/Zeppelin (YS68, 73)
It won't tax the old brian cells (Brain, surely. Ed), but it's a bit of fun in an otherwise lonely world.
Discs Of Death/Artic (YS1, 7)
Disposable Heroes/Power House (YS30, 2)
Dizzy/Codemasters (YS24, 7)
Traditional arcade adventure with a bias to the action side and enough touches to make it a good budget buy.
Dizzy C (YS58, UNR)
As part of the Quattro Adventure compilation.
Dizzy C (YS74, 59)
As part of the Cartoon Collection compilation.
Dizzy Dice/Players (YS16, 7)
Dizzy Down The Rapids C (YS73, 84)
As part of the Dizzy's Excellent Adventures compilation.
Dizzy Prince Of The Yolk Folk C (YS73, 80)
As part of the Dizzy's Excellent Adventures compilation.
Dizzy's Excellent Adventures/Codemasters (YS73, 90)
A complete and utter barg and a must for the festive period. Good, clean family entertainment.
Doc The Destroyer/Melbourne House (YS18, 7)
Doctor Who: Dalek Attack/Admiral (YS91, 56)
I had great fun running around the place, but then the gameplay got in the way.
Dodgy Geezers/Melbourne House (YS15, 7)
Dogfight 2187/Starlight (YS19, 9)
Domes Of Sha, The/River (YS35, 8)
Donkey Kong/Ocean (YS14, 5)
Donkey Kong arcade screenshots A
Double Agent/Tartan (YS28, 8)
Double Dare/Alternative (YS75, 82)
Brain straining game with some cuddlesome twists.
Double Dragon/Melbourne House (YS38, 8)
Beat and slash like you've never done it before! And try the game too. It's a cracker!
Double Dragon C (YS51, 70)
As part of the The Biz compilation.
Double Dragon C (YS59, 70)
As part of the Edition 1 compilation.
Double Dragon II/Melbourne House (YS49, 77)
A snazzy conversion of a fairly average coin-op. Great fun at first, but probably not all that long-lasting.
Double Dragon II C (YS65, 65)
As part of the Fists Of Fury compilation.
Double Dragon II arcade screenshots A
Double Dragon III/Storm (YS75, 88)
Third time lucky for the Dragons. Not quite the best beat-'em-up of all, but darn close.
Double Dragon III arcade screenshots A
Double Dragon arcade screenshots A
Double Take/Ocean (YS15, 8)
Double, The/Johnson Scanatron (YS26, 8)
User-friendly footie management game. Hardly original, but probably the slickest on the market today.
Double, The C (YS75, 70)
As part of the 4-Most Balls, Boots And Brains compilation.
Down To Earth/Firebird (YS20, 8)
Boulderdash inspired but this tale of tactics amongst the underground tunnels is over the top value at an under the bottom price.
Dr Destructo/Bulldog (YS22, 5)
Cheap but less than cheerful aerial shoot 'em up with little variety or originality.
Dr Doom's Revenge/Empire (YS52, 74)
Not a particularly brilliant beat-'em-up, but die-hards and fans of the comic books should like it.
Dracula/CRL (YS14, 6)
Dragon Breed/Activision (YS61, 82)
A pretty decent and original blast-'em-up - though St Dragon got there first (just about).
Dragon Breed arcade screenshots A
Dragon Ninja/Ocean (YS40, 7)
Pretty kick-em-up that doesn't quite fulfil it's promise.
Dragon Ninja/Hit Squad r (YS66, 60)
Dragon Ninja arcade screenshots A
Dragon Slayer/Dream World Adventures (YS86, 70)
Dragon Spirit/Domark (YS46, 83)
Tricky progressive vertical scroller with some nice touches. Nice one, Tengen!
Dragon Spirit C (YS58, 83)
As part of the TNT compilation.
Dragon Spirit/Hit Squad r (YS73, 67)
Dragon Spirit arcade screenshots A
Dragon's Lair/Software Projects (YS12, 5)
Dragon's Lair C (YS38, 6)
As part of the Fists 'n' Throttles compilation.
Dragon's Lair II/Software Projects (YS17, 8)
Dragons Of Flame/US Gold (YS58, 65)
Good potential, but doesn't deliver the goods. D&Ders probably won't find it that bad though.
Dragontorc C (YS37, 4)
As part of the 10 Great Games III compilation.
Draughts Genius/Rack-it (YS23, 8)
Proving that 'budget' doesn't have to mean 'dross', a playable cheapie, but perhaps a little on the easy side.
Dream Team, The/Ocean (YS86, 70)
Dream Warrior/US Gold (YS33, 8)
The pros more than make up for the cons, and it's even vaguely original. Good stuff.
Driller/Incentive P (YS24, PRE)
Driller/Incentive (YS25, 9)
One of the most original 3D games of the year. Beautifully programmed and absorbing problems. Skillo!
Driller C (YS45, 90)
As part of the Special Action compilation.
Driller/Hit Squad r (YS65, 97)
Driller C (YS69, 90)
As part of the Virtual Worlds compilation.
Drop Out (SAM)/Supplement Software (YS83, 25)
Duct, The C (YS30, 7)
As part of the 10 Great Games II compilation.
Duel: Test Drive II, The/Accolade (YS48, 52)
Dull to look at and dull to play, with no real impression of speed, frustrating collision detection and a half-baked feel.
Dungeon Adventure C (YS13, UNR)
As part of the Jewels Of Darkness compilation.
Dungeon Dare + Classroom Chaos/Central Solutions (YS3, 4)
Dyadic (SAM)/Phoenix (YS87, 45)
Dynamic Duo/Firebird (YS40, 7)
A seriously weird but enjoyable clash with the powers of evil (or something).
Dynamite Dan II/Mirrorsoft (YS9, 9)
Dynamite Dux/Activision (YS46, 81)
Very appealing and cute beat 'em up with neat cartoony graphics, but not much variety in gameplay.
Dynamite Dux C (YS65, 59)
As part of the Fists Of Fury compilation.
Dynamite Dux arcade screenshots A
Dynasty Wars/US Gold (YS54, 80)
A brilliant scroller horse-wise, but slightly questionable in the old durability department.
Dynasty Wars C (YS66, 80)
As part of the Coin-Op Hits II compilation.
Dyzonium (SAM)/FRED (YS85, 82)
