Advanced Lawnmower Simulator/Gardensoft (YS28, 9)Classic simulation game from an exciting new name in Speccy software. Guaranteed number one! Anarchy/Rack-it (YS26, 8) Top-notch Cheapie from Hewson's Rack-It label and the fertile brain of Dominic Robinson. Beyond The Ice Palace/Elite (YS31, 8) A chunky scrolling platform and ladders game. Great to play, but becomes 'blinkin' difficult too soon. Buffalo Bill's Rodeo Games/Tynesoft (YS45, 54) A multi-game Wild West jaunt with one accent on fun, and erm, another accent on being a bit crap - and easy. Mind you, young children might find it a bit of a hoot! California Games/Epyx (YS27, 7) Not too frenetic keyboard waggler with six quite playable West-Coast flavoured events. Up to four can compete. Captain America/Go! (YS27, 7) Jolly little explore'n'shoot game that hasn't got an awful lot to do with Capt. America but is fun all the same. Unlike the soundtrack. Carrier Command/Rainbird (YS43, 94) An action packed solid-filled 3D strategic shoot 'em up that 'they' said could never be successfully converted down to the Spectrum - except that it has!! Astoundingly brilliant stuff! Chicago 30s/US Gold (YS41, 69) A nicely presented horizontally scrolling 'gangster' shoot 'em-up which may leave you unsatisfied due to its lack of difficulty. Darius +/The Edge (YS53, 75) A sideways-scrolling shoot-'em-up with all the usual stuff. A bit like R-Type really, but not half as good. Desolator/US Gold (YS32, 7) Birrova hybrid of Ikari Warriors and Gauntlet, quite good fun, but not as good as either of the above. Deviants/Players (YS28, 8) Top-notch cheapie platformer from the author ofJoe Blade. It's positively deviant (f'nar)! Dr Doom's Revenge/Empire (YS52, 74) Not a particularly brilliant beat-'em-up, but die-hards and fans of the comic books should like it. Game Set And Match II/Ocean (YS38, 8) Birrova mixed bag, really. Two great games, six slightly iffy games and two totally crap ones. Worth getting for the good ones. Gothik/Firebird (YS30, 9) Gauntlet with knobs on. A big, bulging, throbbing, zappabout maze game with bonus wibbly bits bunged on - it's great! Great Giana Sisters, The/Rainbow Arts (YS34, 8) Side view monochrome avoid and collect 'em-up scrolling platform game. It's in the same vein as Wonderboy, but much more addictive. Great stuff. Hopping Mad/Elite (YS33, 8) Scrolling bouncy ball avoid 'em/collect 'em-up. Inflatable 'tear your hair out just one more go' frolics. Almost as addictive as banana Nesquik. MASK II/Gremlin (YS26, 6) A not particularly impressive shoot 'em up/get something and take it somewhere else-ish type game. For Mask fans only. Mr Heli/Firebird (YS44, 83) Very playable four way scrolling shoot 'em up and buy-extra-weapons-as-you-go type game with a cutesy Japanese feel. Shame about the lack of colour though! Muncher, The/Gremlin (YS37, 8) A large sprite, prehistoric mega-romp and smash-em up with the emphasis on total destruction. Plagued by slow control response but great fun nevertheless. Night Raider/Gremlin (YS34, 7) A cross between a tactical shoot 'em up and a flight simulation that hasn't quite come off in the 'absorbing' department. Northstar/Gremlin (YS28, 6) Slowish Exolon-style scroller that's long on style but short on originality. Not bad, though. Oink/CRL (YS27, 7) Three slightly budgety games tied nicely together in a full-price package. There's a challenge in here somewhere. Psycho Pigs UXB/US Gold (YS34, 8) A meaty, frantic, dashabout the screen and bomb anything that moves 'em-up. Like a bacon sandwich, you'll be coming back for more. Purple Saturn Day/Infogrames (YS48, 60) A well weird compilation of games which leaves a similar 'taste in the mouth' as Captain Blood. If you loved that one, you'll quite like this. R-Type/Activision (YS37, 9) An unmissable shoot 'em up. As addictive as Angel Delight and twice as butterscotchy. As faithful a conversion as one could hope for. It's a corker. Return Of The Jedi/Domark (YS37, 7) Third of the Star Wars games, and a total style departure from the previous two. Not a bad little diagonally scrolling avoid 'em up, but then not a particularly brilliant one. Run The Gauntlet/Imagine (YS40, 7) Multi-event racing, boat driving and assault-course game from the TV show of the same name. Not particularly well implemented, but quite good fun despite it. Slap on the wrist for Imagine - it could have been a lot better. Running Man, The/Grandslam (YS42, 90) Movie licence that makes a perfect computer game. Frenetic and visually great kick and shoot 'em up with the occasional need for quick logic under pressure. Sterling stuff! Saboteur/Encore (YS34, 8)Savage/Firebird (YS36, 9) A highly colourful 'three games in one' package in which each of the sub games would merit a release on their own. Scramble Spirits/Grandslam (YS51, 75) A monochromatic vertically-scrolling shoot-‘em-up with the emphasis very firmly on, erm, aeroplanes. Quite good fun. Side Arms/Go! (YS29, 6) Rather disappointing coin-op conversion. Flat graphics are the main problem. Not very inspiring. Skate Crazy/Gremlin (YS32, 9) A beautifully presented and very tricky roller-skating avoid 'em/collect 'em and do lots of stunts 'em up. Great stu%£*D4j. Space Harrier II/Grandslam (YS51, 85) The sequel to Space Harrier. Not awe-inspiring, but hardly disappointing either. Frantic 3D shoot-'em-up action all the way. Star Paws/Software Projects (YS29, 8) A jolly little game owing more than a passing resemblance to Road Runner. At budget price worth the spondies. Starring Charlie Chaplin/US Gold (YS31, 7) Original vehicle for a knock-em-down. The vehicle's great, shame the action doesn't match up. Nice try. Stunt Car Racer/MicroStyle (YS47, 93) A gasp-a-minute, vertigo-inducing, solid-filled-vector-graphics road-racing game. The Speccy's processing speed has coped admirably (again) with a 'downgraded' 16 bit game. Super Scramble Simulator/Gremlin (YS43, 80) BBC's Kick Start on the Speccy. Quite a challenging and fun Trials Riding game with barrels of addictiveness hiding behind its slightly unpolished visual exterior. Vrooooooom! Super Wonderboy/Activision (YS49, 75) A souped-up version of Wonderboy, which improves on much of the original in theory but at a slight cost to gameplay. Trackmaster/Destiny (YS37, 8) A maze game merged with a few shoot 'em up moments and logic problems which will have me, for one, going back for more. Pretty good stuff. Ultimate: The Collected Works/US Gold (YS33, 9) Wazzy compilation of some of the best games written for the Speccy. If you've never seen the Ultimate games, then get this! Vigilante/US Gold (YS42, 69) Pretty standard beat 'em up. You've probably seen it all before, so only buy if you're addicted to the genre and you've already got the better ones. Xarax/Firebird (YS30, 7) SAM Special 1 - SAM: Is It The Speccy Of The Nineties!? (YS51) OR If You Think The Spectrum Is 'Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow', Why Not Try A SAM Toupe? SAM Special 2 - The SAM Coupe Fax Box (YS51) SAM Special 3 - Bruce Gordon Interview (YS51) SAM Special 4 - Soft on SAM? (YS51) SAM Special 5 - FLASH !! (Oo-er!) (YS51) Well, you've seen the pictures all over the shop, so you'll already know that the SAM Coupe comes with its own art package. But what's it like? Well read on, cloth-head, and you might find out... |
