Biz, The/Ocean (YS51, 96)The best compilation I've seen for blimmin' eons. If you don't have any of these games then this is a "must"! Chuck Yeager's Advanced Flight Trainer/Electronic Arts (YS43, 70) For 128K flight sim fans and people interested in flying this could be well entertaining. For the remainder - a tad dodgy, overly complex and difficult to master. Crazy Cars II/Titus (YS43, 84) One great rip-roaring cops and robbers type outrageously fast driving game, with scrummy sound on the 128k version. Cyberball/Domark (YS53, 70) Nice idea but far too ambitious for the humble Spec. Die-hard fans could get some fun out of it. Dragons Of Flame/US Gold (YS58, 65) Good potential, but doesn't deliver the goods. D&Ders probably won't find it that bad though. Fiendish Freddy's Big Top O' Fun/Mindscape (YS54, 80) Six brill tongue-in-cheek circus games, but hampered by 'probably the world's largest multiload'. Galaxy Force/Activision (YS50, 78) A competent conversion of the coin-op hit of the same name. Basically Afterburner in space (but not quite as hot), with multiloads, average sound and nice new graphics. Gary Lineker's Hot Shot/Gremlin (YS41, 68) An enjoyable game, which despite having little new to offer to the seasoned Speccy football player, compares favourably with its rivals. Hard Drivin'/Domark (YS49, 90) Difficult to master, technically accomplished arcade/driving sim with brilliant graphics. If you like flight sims you'll definitely get your money's worth!! Heavy Metal/US Gold (YS50, 75) A colourful romp through the wonderful world of armoured warfare. Different types of game, different levels of quality. Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade/US Gold (YS45, 92) Good graphics, puzzling mazes and skillful joystick juggling, all pitched at the right level of difficulty. Ironlord/Ubisoft (YS46, 90) A sort of French answer to Times Of Lore. On a smaller scale in some respects, but with a much greater variety of gameplay. Enjoyable, and colourful. Ivan "Ironman" Stewart's Super Off-Road Racer/Virgin (YS59, 91) Updated Supersprint, perfectly programmed and bags of fun. Highly recommended. Judge Dredd/Virgin (YS61, 74) A nice attempt to capture a flavour of the character. Sad graphics but large number of scenarios. Last Duel/US Gold (YS39, 6) Lip smackin', joystick jugglin', vertical scrollin', long on loadin', fast and challengin', samey shoot 'em up. Lords Of Chaos/Blade (YS54, 90) A brill sword and sorcery strategy game. Loads of depth, pretty easy to get into and nicely presented. Microprose Soccer/Microprose (YS42, 82) A good arcadey footie game with many novel new features. Especially good for 128k owners! Ninja Warriors/Virgin (YS49, 70) Maybe I couldn't expect more from the Speccy conversion of such a big arcade game, but for me it's a disappointing hack-'em-up scroller. Passing Shot/Mirrorsoft (YS46, 65) An addictive little number, but a bit marred by things like dubious computer returns and the inability to take on a mate. Power Drift/Activision (YS49, 82) A spiffing coin-op conversion, encapsulating most of the arcade features. A bit flawed, but a playable gem nevertheless. Best on 128k. Red Heat/Ocean (YS43, 85) Jaw-socking stuff.Quirky and clear with a lot of variety but only a half-sized 'envelope' screen. Shadow Of The Beast/Gremlin (YS60, 88) Nicely pitched sword-and-sorcery game, mixing beat-'em-up, puzzle solving and arcade adventure. Special Action/Ocean (YS45, 82) Largely a thinking person's compendium of popular titles. If you don'thave the main games, then it's a veritable barg! Spherical/Rainbow Arts (YS48, 88) A colourful and challenging game requiring as much mental agility as joystick skill. It's original and it's wizard! (And so are you, funnily enough!) Stir Crazy/Infogrames (YS50, 58) Five independent sub-games all starring an obscure Belgian comic character. Quite well executed in their way but small and short-lived. Time Scanner/Activision (YS44, 91) A splendid, realistic pinball simulation, a trifle limited in game size, but eminently playable. Tintin On The Moon/Infogrames (YS49, 80) A lovingly crafted arcade adventure that's both playable and addictive. Suffers from smallness of game size and lack of difficulty. Turbo OutRun/US Gold (YS50, 70) A disappointing sequel to the original rolling-road racing coin-op. Much better than the original OutRun, but hardly the best of the current driving games. Tusker/System 3 (YS48, 82) System 3 back on track with an Indyesque game in the Last Ninja II vein. Smaller in size than Ninja, but with tons more colour and just as puzzling. World Cup Soccer Italia '90/Virgin (YS55, 79) Above-par footie arcade action. Not that bona fide a World Cup game, but addictive fun nevertheless. Xenon/Melbourne House (YS40, 9) A very good conversion which, as space shoot 'em ups go, is a bit of a rip snorter! A mite tricky, but well playable and addictive to boot! Zombi/Ubisoft (YS52, 77) Don't be deceived by the lack of arcade action and colourful graphics - Zombi is an addictive and enjoyable romp. Hold My Hand Very Tightly (Very Tightly) (YS44) by Whistlin' Rick Wilson SAM Special 1 - SAM: Is It The Speccy Of The Nineties!? (YS51) OR If You Think The Spectrum Is 'Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow', Why Not Try A SAM Toupe? SAM Special 2 - The SAM Coupe Fax Box (YS51) SAM Special 3 - Bruce Gordon Interview (YS51) SAM Special 4 - Soft on SAM? (YS51) SAM Special 5 - FLASH !! (Oo-er!) (YS51) Well, you've seen the pictures all over the shop, so you'll already know that the SAM Coupe comes with its own art package. But what's it like? Well read on, cloth-head, and you might find out... |
